So did that last post scare you?

Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

Two weeks ago I went to the doctor's for my semi-annual bloodwork. Thank you, diabetes! I love having blood drawn.

So I go & while I'm waiting I muck up my lace leaf shawl. Fine. A-frogging we will go. I CO & things move along nicely.

Today I went back to get my bloodwork results (Good results!) & brought along my shawl. AGAIN I mucked it up! I'm going to frog back a row tonight. I should know better than to knit lace in the waiting room at our hospital!

My good news is my A1c is lower than it was in Sept. Not as low as I would like but still very healthy & my doctor smiled. It was also interesting as I finally broke down & bought a blood pressure monitor to use at home. My bp is high at the doctor's office so I was on meds. I had an allergic reaction to a new med a week & a half ago & went off it. Interestingly enough my bp stayed low. 112/73 low. Hmmmmm, white coat syndrome anyone? So today my dr. declared I don't need any other meds which is great!

On a sad note (semi-sad) my mp3 player died today. Hunter bought me one in Oct--an 8g sansa. Cheaper than ipod & was nice on the drive to VT at the holidays. I love books on tape/cd for long drives. So fast forward to earlier this month--it froze up & wouldn't fix itself. I exchanged it on the 10th of this month. Today, same thing! froze up. Wouldn't fix itself. 2 1/2 weeks into using it? I only use it in the car so it's not like it's getting pounded on at the gym or anything. So they issued a refund & off to Best Buy I went to get a cute pink 8g ipod! I like itunes better than Rhapsody because there is so much available! I subscribed to Lime & Violet as well as Ready Set knit----are there any other podcasts you savvy gals think I should subscribe to?

Did I mention it's pink???

I'm enjoying the John Adams miniseries on HBO! I'm not a Paul Giamatti fan but love this show. Right now JA is in France w/ Benjamin Franklin. Oh those crazy French & their powdered faces, blush---pardonnez moi, rouge!, faux beauty marks & ornate dress. And those are just the men!!!

Consider yourself warned.

***WARNING*** Political rant. If you don't want to read, don't. If you do & you don't agree, fine but you HAVE been warned.

Maybe it's just me, but if you've been under fire, especially sniper fire, you'd remember it. And if you haven't, you don't lie about it. And it's not a "mistake" when you claim you have been under fire. It's a LIE. And it makes YOU a LIAR.

And I am sorry but someone saying "God D*mn America" offends me. It makes me angry & it makes me sad. Our country is far from perfect but if it's so horrible then WHY are people still risking their lives to live here? And if you've been a member of a church where the pastor has made such comments surely you've heard similar things in the past 20 yrs. If you really haven't then my guess is you've been sleeping thru the sermons. Or perhaps you weren't in attendance that day. Yeah, that's it.

Please, not yet!

So the Wee One sees the Nickelodeon channel's award show commercial w/ Jack Black (who shall go by "bane of my existance" from here on). She giggles at him. GIGGLES. "Mommy, that boy is funny"

Noooooooooooooooooooo!

Not the bane of my existance, please no.

I'll be glad when the award show is over & the commercial isn't running!

I'm halfway thru my shawl! Very pretty & I do like the pattern!

We found the Wee One's Belle doll today! We were on our walk & dropped another Polly Pocket doll (she calls her "Backtia"---don't ask) & as we were retracing our steps I peeked near a bush that has some beautiful coral flowers & lo & behold there was Belle! About 30 feet away on the sidewalk was Backtia. A joyful day in the Wee One's life!!

Im feeling a bit better but my appetite is still eh & I'm finding eating is a chore & an adventure. Hopefully this week I will start to feel better. I'm getting sick of soup & grilled cheese & grapes!

Babble babble

Maybe it's the fact that I've had a cold for almost a week, maybe it's the fact that I had some weird tummy bug today, maybe it's just the fact that it's the anniversary of 2 significant events in my life.

The first being that today would have been my sister's 52nd birthday. She died 2 months before turning 14 of meningitis. She was the oldest of us kids & I'm not kidding when I tell you she was perfect. Julie was very pretty, sweet to everyone, very intelligent & when I was little, thought she had perfect penmanship. Her death was a huge blow to my parents, family & our community. I went from being the 2nd daughter to the only daughter, my brother Michael suddenly was the oldest. Years later when I was in my party girl stage I would run into a guy who had a crush on her in grade school. He'd always tell me how perfect she was, beautiful & just the best person ever. Amazing how 1 person impacts so many lives. I wish I'd known her more than I did as I was 2 1/2 when she died. I think I would have liked to have had an older sister.

The other is the 5th anniversary of the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Last year I blogged ad nauseum about that night & the following day so I shall spare you this year, thank me later! 5 years later Hunter is winding down his 3rd combat tour over there, the Wee One will be 4 in a couple weeks & will celebrate her 3rd birthday w/out her Daddy. War changes all involved. As the proud wife of a soldier, it's made me stronger. I have always been independant but these year long deployments remind me just how independant I really am.

Last week I came down w/ a little cold which quickly moved to my chest so I've been a coughing machines. Yesterday I wound up w/ a tummy bug so today I've been weak & just blah. I've managed to keep down 5 peanut butter crackers, 3/4 of a grilled cheese, some grapes & a red skittle that the Wee One promised would help me to feel better.

Im thinking more grapes would make me feel better. And some water. I'm wishing I had some diet ginger ale & am kicking myself for not picking some up when I drove her to school this am!

Oh an unrelated note---I watched Hairspray the other night--the remake. Very cute, the color is vibrant & beautiful & the songs are cute. John Travolta's Baltimore accent is AWFUL. AW-FUL! My Mom's twin sister has lived in "ball-mer" for over 50 yrs & I'll tell you, my cousins sound nothing like JT's accent. His "hon" was horrible & forced. And that Mid-Atlantic coastal "o"? Yeah, overkill. I did enjoy him as Edna as I do like JT. He was one of my first pre-teen heartthrobs. Vinny Babarino anyone? I said a-bar-bar-bar, bar-bar-barino. . .*sigh* Grease? Saturday Night Fever?! When I was 10 & the movie came out I had the soundtrack. The movie was WAY beyond my 10 yr old viewing! There was a small disco in my hometown called "Le Club" Original, no? ha! Rumor had it there was a dance floor that lit up just like the club in SNF! Was there anything better in life???? Sadly they closed before I turned 18 & could go myself. Of course, disco was dead by then.

I'm off to get more grapes & maybe some crackers. Tonight is LOST so you'll find me watching w/ the Ravelry LOST group.

Mommy Magic

Let's revisit my Where Do Lost Toys Go? entry from 1/23, shall we?

The Wee One lost her little Belle doll today while we were on our walk. She's somewhere in the pine straw near the duck pond but I'll be darned if I could find her. We scoured the area & came up empty-Belle-handed. So we retraced our steps to the ball court where Libby plays ball. Nope, no sign of Belle anywhere. The Wee One tells me that Cinderella & the Polly Pocket doll that came with us were crying b/c they missed her. Now, if that isn't cute, I dont know what is!

While we were walking the Wee One tripped on the sidewalk & got a little scrape on her hand. So I send her into the bathroom to wash her hands while I don my cape & turn into SUPER MOMMY (said with echo, drum roll & preferably a flash of light). Ducking into my closet (Superman had a phonebooth, I have my walk in!) I discover that the little 3 piece Easter set of the Disney Princess dolls I picked up has a Belle! I debate tearing into it but figure the Sleeping Beauty & Cinderella dolls will serve as extras in case of a future emergency. And, as luck would have it, Belle is wearing the exact same dress as ours! Does it get any better than that? I mean, really!

So I go into super stealth mode & put Belle on the floor in the hallway standing between Cinderella & Polly Pocket! GENIUS! I dont say anything & check in on the handwashing progress.

The Wee One comes out of the bathroom & sees her. The smile lit up her entire face! Belle had come home!!! Mommy Magic strikes again!

On the knitting front, I am having so much fun with my Blue Jeans Lace Leaf Shawl. Thank you, Dorothy, for inviting me to join the KAL on Ravelry (aka "number 1 time suck!")----I'm on my 8th repeat & enjoying this pattern!!

I splurged & bought some Handmaiden Sea Silk to make the Strangling Vine Lace scarf. I've never used Sea Silk before but it feels so decadent!!

We're going to VA next month for the Wee One's spring break so I'm hoping to hit up a couple of the knit shops-- Yarn Theory & Backstitches especially!

1 yr ago today

Daddy left for Iraq. What a wild year we've had. The Wee One has grown so much---she's not the same little girl he left! I'm not the same as when he left but definitely for the better---25lbs lighter! Woo Hoo!

The good news is we're in the home stretch & there is an end in sight!

I'm aiming for at least 5 more pounds before he gets home!!

You know your degree hasn't gone to waste

when you're grocery shopping & go past the floral department. I do it everytime I'm in the grocery store. The Wee One & I smell flowers. Hyacinths are my favorites. Especially purple ones. Pink & white are fine but purple? Heaven!

So I wander thru & discover a beautiful purple Hyacinth & in my head I think:

'You gave me hyacinths first a year ago;

'They called me the hyacinth girl.'*

and you realize that all those English Lit classes in college weren't for naught! Eliot, people! I'm quoting TS Eliot in the floral department of Publix.

So not only am I 5 with my love of ants on a log, I'm also still a 20 yr old quoting literature!

*The Waste Land. It also features the popular line "April is the cruelest month" Since the Wee One's birthday is in April I respectfully disagree!

I swear, I'm 5

Every evening I have a snack. Some nights it's cheese & crackers, sometimes I have fruit, some nights I splurge & have a "hoodsie" cup (it's a New England reference & you may not get it)---one of those individual serving cups of ice creams that are popular at kid's birthday parties.

I'm doing a 5 week challenge & this is week 2. The challenge is to eat 5 servings of fruits/vegetables, exercise 30 min, drink 64oz of water & walk 10k steps every day. The water & 30 min. exercise are easy for me. I have a diet coke in the morning for my caffeine & then I drink water the rest of the day. Each day I walk w/ the Wee One & Libby. If it's a school day for the Wee One I try to get to the gym or walk Libby that morning as well. The 10k steps----my best yet is 9k!

The fruits & veggies---I'm good w/ 4 but am really pushing for the 5.

So the other night I decided "ants on a log" sounded really good for a snack. You do know what they are right? Celery w/ peanut butter & you place raisins on top of the PB. Hence, ants on a log! Crunchy, sweet & peanut buttery goodness all in one! Yes, I am 5!
